Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times.
Americans throw away 35 billion plastic water bottles every year.

How do you make the most innovative multi-use silicone bottle in the world? If you’re Craig Madaus, you take a job loss, add some yoga and Starbucks and mix it up with a monster storm at sea. The result is bubi bottle, a scrunchable refillable water bottle that can also be used for waterproof storage, hydration, heating soup or tea, or a hot or cold pack. When not in use, this unique bottle rolls up to fit in your pocket.
Typical for Craig, it was an adventure the whole way. After losing his job in advertising, he spent his days walking around New York, taking yoga classes and talking to people at Starbucks. No one was hiring and the future looked, well, pretty dry.
As he searched for a new position and a new life, he took a temporary job as part of a sailboat crew, delivering a boat from Connecticut to St. Thomas.
Somewhere between Bermuda and St. Thomas, the boat encountered 30-foot waves and high winds. The boom broke and split in half as the crew tried to steer through the storm. According to Craig, it was terrifying. The crew somehow muscled through it.
The crew took turns emptying the boat in shifts. Craig’s shift was 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. As he emptied the cold water through the black, chilly night, he recalled his yoga classes when he lugged around an enormous bottle of water from the classes to his interviews. Later that night, as he crushed disposable water bottles to put in the garbage, he realized that their design, with concave bottoms, made it so he couldn’t completely flatten the bottles. While facing five days on the open sea with only one sail, the refrigerator broke. Their food supply was rotting. To make things even worse, the boat was taking on water at an alarming rate.
Suddenly, Craig had an idea for a “scrunchable” reusable water bottle. Environmentally friendly. Completely packable. No more lugging around embarrassingly big, clumsy, empty bottles to interviews. As he stood there that night, all alone on the deck, the idea kept coming, refining itself. He could design a bottle that keeps water in, while also keeping it out. It could be used to keep supplies dry while backpacking or boating. He was getting excited.
If he designed this bottle to be flexible, it could be filled with oatmeal, beans, rice, keys, cellphones. Whatever needs to stay dry, whatever the adventure. That’s when he knew safe, flexible, medical-grade silicone would be the perfect bottle material.
When he got home, waterlogged, exhausted and hungry, the first thing he did (after taking a shower and getting something to eat, that is) was ask his friend Kelly Torrence to draw the design for the bottle. He ordered business cards with a picture of the bottle and a place where a potential customer could write down their email address and what color they wanted their eco friendly bottle to be.
Then he went to Starbucks and started talking to people again. He got almost 250 cards with color choices and email addresses. After a whirlwind production process, 2,000 bottles were shipped to his apartment. Craig felt ecstatic to have the product, even though the boxes were taking over his entire living room.
After 20 minutes he realized he really didn’t have a clue as to how to get these into retail stores. So he went back to Starbucks, where business people hang out, and consulted with the people he chatted with there. bubi bottles are now sold in 28 countries, at many of the world’s most renowned retailers like Brookstone, Fab, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and soon in Whole Foods.
What adventure will you take your bubi on?
BPA Free Reusable Portable Collapsible Silicone Water Bottles
The revolutionary, multifunctional bübi bottle is made of medical-grade silicone and can safely handle much more than ordinary water bottles: coffee, tea, medical supplies etc.
In a unique field test, a 9 footalligator chomped on our bubi bottle for 10 minutes. Result? It took a while to get the bottle away from the gator, but it had no punctures. So if you are not in a fight with a gator, we believe the bubi bottle will handle your gym or book bag well.
We also shot the bubi bottle with a 9mm, and well the bullet went through the bottle, which is extreme, but it did not leak until squeezed.
The bottle is silicone, not plastic, and with care will not retain odors. There are a few things you can do to keep your bubi bottle fresh:
1. Use filtered water. Unfiltered water has bacteria, and over a short time will cause a stale odor.
2. Precondition the bottle before first use by adding boiling hot soapy water, sloshing it around, and rinsing thoroughly again with hot boiling water.
3. Washing suggestions: wash promptly, do not use bleach, baking soda etc.
4. You can also turn your bubi bottle inside out to scrub the inside from the outside. Simply disassemble the cap assembly including the carabiner, add soapy water, slosh around and push the bottom through the top to wash the inside from the outside. Reverse the process when finished. Watch this video for demonstration.
Yes. It has been tested, simply fill the bubi bottle with filtered water, twist on the cap, and place in the freezer. The bottle will expand as it freezes and return to its shape while thawing. The silicone bubi material acts as an insulator while thawing and will retain the cold longer than normal single wall bottles. Use as a cold compress, freezer pack, just fill half full and wrap a wrist or ankle, or simply to keep water ice-cold for drinking later.
Some even freeze a bubi and bottle to place in a picnic basket, lunch box or back pack to keep food cold for the day. The ideas continue to be brought to us through users of the bottles.
Yes. The bubi bottle is made high grade silicone and thoroughly enjoys hot liquids. The bottle can also be used as a soothing hot compress pillow when flying, camping or that long car ride. Even good for cramps, just fill half full.
Yes. the bubi bottle is made from high grade silicone and can be placed over a campfire, sterno, or on a stove, keep the temp to around 400 degrees and yes the bottle may turn black from the soot, but it will wash off the bottle, It has been tested to take 10-12 minutes to get the water boiling.
Now the precaution, the bottle will be hot after this, that is why we have the carabiner, use it at the end of a stick or mitt, to take off the fire.
The bubi bottle has been carefully designed to close tightly. The only times it has failed is because the mouthpiece is not pushed into the neck of the bottle enough. Make sure the mouthpiece is 1/8″ below the neck of the bottle; the exposed silicone is your seal. Watch the video below to learn more.
Should you lose a part, cap, inner retainer or outside threads, don’t worry. We have a page where you can find the replacement parts you need.
